White House 2007 Grover Cleveland Ornament
A Christmas Ornament presents the 2007 White House Grover Cleveland Christmas Ornament.
Stephen Grover Cleveland was only President to serve two non-consecutive terms (1885–1889, 1893–1897). Grover Cleveland was the 22nd and 24th President of the United States. President Cleveland was born March 18, 1837 and died June 24, 1908.
During the political domination of the Republicans after the Civil War, Grover Cleveland was the only Democratic President to reside in the White House through out the second half of the 19thcentury until 1912. President Cleveland was known for his honesty, independence, integrity, and commitment to the principles of classical liberalism as well as his opposition to corruption, imperialism, patronage, subsidies and taxes. He was also the leader of the Bourbon Democrats.
Although President Cleveland entered the White House as a bachelor, he was the only President to be married on the White House grounds. Before his marriage his sister stood as his First Lady. During his Presidency there were numerous rumors about his romances but on June 2, 1886 President Cleveland married Ms. Francis Folsom at seven o’clock in the Blue Room of the White House.
This ornament captures President Cleveland and Ms. Francis Folsom during their wedding nuptials. The ornament also showcases themes from their wedding album. The front of the ornament features a monogram from President Cleveland. It anchors a border using orange blossoms from his bride's wedding gown, while the back features Frances Folsom's monogram.
It is said that, when the wedding was over, Cleveland and his new wife sent a decoy couple into the presidential carriage. The photographers and other media followed his couple while the President and his new bride snuck off to their honeymoon.
