The 2012 official White House Christmas ornament honors our twenty-seventh President, William Howard Taft, who, rather than pursuing an aggressive legislative agenda, was more concerned with executing the laws already in place. William Howard Taft introduced motorized transportation to the Presidency and the White House in 1909, courtesy of a White Motor Company "Model M" steam-powered automobile capable of seating 7 passengers.
The introduction of an automobile broke a long standing tradition of reliance on horse-drawn carriages for presidential ground travel. This year's ornament is an excellent model reproduction of the 1909 White Model M and is capable of standing alone upon its four wheels on a desk or mantle piece.
One side depicts President Taft in the back seat with several Christmas gifts sitting in his lap and wearing a top hat and scarf and being chauffeured by George H. Robinson. On the other side of the model, Mrs. Taft also sits in the back seat with several gifts on her lap. The Great Seal of the United States adorns both back doors of the model car. Finished in a dark green enamel and 24k gold, this is a beautifully rendered, exquisitely detailed ornament.
